Biden will receive King Abdullah II of Jordan on Monday to discuss Gaza

Joe Biden will receive King Abdullah II of Jordan at the White House on February 12, to celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, and to discuss “the situation in Gaza”, announced the spokesperson for the American president in a press release.

The visit, to which “First Lady” Jill Biden and Queen Rania of Jordan will be associated, will be an opportunity, according to a press release, to talk about “American efforts to support the Palestinian people”.

The two leaders also want to discuss “the idea of lasting peace through a two-state solution guaranteeing Israel’s security.” Jordan, like other Arab states in the region, is demanding an immediate end to hostilities in Gaza, which the United States does not want to hear about for the moment.

During a visit by the head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken in early January, Abdullah II of Jordan called on Washington to put pressure on Israel to obtain an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza and warned of “catastrophic repercussions » of a continuation of hostilities. The kingdom, a neighbor of Israel and a key ally of the United States in the region, hosts more than two million Palestinian refugees according to the United Nations.

Relations between Jordan and Israel are governed by a peace treaty dating back to 1994. Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have left 27,840 dead, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.

Israel vowed to destroy Hamas after its unprecedented attack on Israeli soil on October 7, which killed 1,140 people, mainly civilians, according to an AFP count based on the Israeli death toll.
