Dimitris Natsios Calls Greece’s Support for Ukraine ‘Criminal’

Dimitris Natsios is a Greek politician and teacher with a degree in Pedagogy and Theology. In 2019, he established the Democratic Patriotic Movement—Victory and carried the presidency of the party. The party opposes Greece’s support for Ukraine concerning Russia’s invasion and prefers neutrality. The party has been referred to as “pro-Russia.” Concerning Greece’s relations with Turkey, the party takes a hardline approach to its arguments.

Mr. Natsios is known for his combative reports on national and religious issues. It maintains – and does not hide it – open tracks of communication with chapel organisations, but also with the monasteries of Mount Athos. He also does not conceal his pro-Russian feelings, calling Greece’s backing for Ukraine “criminal”. He was one of the leading exponents of the negative line for the Prespa Agreement, attacking “national inferiority”.

He began his political activity in 2014 with the “Freedom” movement, whose launching declaration he signed. In 2015 he joined the “Radical National Rally” of Vasilis Kapernaros, participating in the party’s administrative committee. Later he joined the party Society – Political Party of the Successors of Kapodistrias, from which he left in 2016, following rumours of his establishing a new political party.

On 17 June 2019, responding to the Prespa Agreement, he established the Democratic Patriotic Movement – Victory. In the May 2023 Greek legislative election, the first time it took part in national elections, the party obtained a percentage of 2.92% of the popular vote,  narrowly missing the entrance to the Hellenic Parliament. A month later, in the election of June, the party amassed 3.7% and elected 10 MPs. In the 2024 EU elections, his party increased its percentages and managed to elect 1 MEP.
