Gaza: UN warns of risk of famine

At the slightest distribution of flour, the same scene. Like this Monday in Gaza City, hungry men and women are struggling to survive. “There is no food, no drink, children are dying (…) massacres take place as soon as planes drop humanitarian aid,” said Oum Omar al-Mashharawi, a resident of Gaza. Equipped with empty pans, these children try to warn of an imminent risk of famine.

After five months of war, the humanitarian crisis is unprecedented in Gaza. Every day, hundreds of people die from malnutrition and dehydration according to the UN. For the head of European diplomacy, the person responsible is designated. “Israel is causing a famine. It’s just unacceptable, famine is being used as a weapon of war,” said Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy.

Israel responds that it authorizes an intensification of humanitarian aid. Despite the airdrops and the sea bridge opened on Saturday, the quantities are insufficient. Negotiations for a possible ceasefire are still ongoing.
