Germany’s Baerbock Urges EU Sanctions on Niger ‘Military’

Germany will push for individual sanctions against the “military” in Niger, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in Berlin on Monday after discussing the situation in the African country with her Senegalese counterpart Aissatta Tall Sall.

I condemn the coup in the strongest terms and we welcome the decisive and firm response of ECOWAS to the crisis in Niger.

Germany and the European Union support the two-track approach of ECOWAS diplomacy and pressure.

In order to emphasize the efforts of ECOWAS, Germany has suspended all payments to the State of Niger and we now want to push for individual sanctions among EU member states against the military.

I would like to clarify here that what the regional organization of ECOWAS is doing on the ground at the moment is not only important for the people of Niger, but also for peace in the world.
