In Paris, 2 billion euros in humanitarian aid promised to help Sudan at war

The international community pledged on Monday to provide more than two billion euros in humanitarian aid to Sudan, President Emmanuel Macron declared after a conference in Paris. This initially aimed to collect more than a billion euros in donations and coordinate mediation to put an end to this war which has left thousands dead and caused the displacement of more than 8.5 million people, according to the UN.

The international community, meeting Monday April 15 in Paris during a humanitarian conference for Sudan torn apart by war for a year, promised to provide aid of more than 2 billion euros for the civilian population, announced Emmanuel Macron .

“In total, we can announce that more than 2 billion euros will be mobilized,” declared the French president, specifying that before Monday’s meeting, only 190 million commitments had been recorded. Of the 2 billion, the member countries of the European Union will contribute 900 million euros, including 110 million promised by France.

“This support (…) will make it possible to respond to the most urgent needs in the sectors of food and nutritional security, health, water, sanitation, education, protection of more vulnerable”, also declared Emmanuel Macron.

Although the pledges of donations are substantial, they remain far from the 3.8 billion euros of necessary aid estimated by the United Nations.

The French president also “solemnly” called on the belligerents to respect international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.

The conflict has left thousands dead and caused a humanitarian catastrophe.
