Former US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Israeli media published Monday that Israel must “end” the war in Gaza because it is losing “a lot of support” around the world.

The statements by Mr. Trump, the Republican candidate tipped to take on incumbent President Joe Biden in November’s presidential election, came on the day the United Nations Security Council demanded a ceasefire in the Gaza strip. Gaza, the United States, Israel’s main supporter, having abstained.

“We must end the war. We have to end this,” Mr. Trump said, according to a partial transcript of an interview with the Israel Hayom newspaper.

“And I will say that Israel has to be very careful because it is losing a lot of the world, losing a lot of support, we have to finish, we have to get the job done,” Mr. Trump added.

Mr. Trump often presents himself as a staunch ally of Israel, recalling his decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem and his administration’s role in brokering the 2020 normalization deals between Israel and Arab countries like the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
