Majority Of Palestinians Prefer China To US As Mediator With Israel

Nearly 60% of respondents said they did not trust the United States to mediate negotiations

A majority of Palestinians view China and Russia as potentially effective mediators in their peace talks with Israel, according to a poll conducted by YouGov for the Arab News website. The survey showed that the Palestinians’ preferred potential mediator was Russia, followed closely by the European Union and China. The United States, on the other hand, is far from popular.

80% of Palestinian Arabs welcomed a Chinese offer to mediate with Israel. Nearly 60% of respondents said they did not trust the United States to mediate the negotiations.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang recently told his Israeli and Palestinian counterparts that his country is ready to facilitate peace talks between the two sides.

China has more than once offered to mediate between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, but it has also expressed support for a two-state solution, with an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state bounded by pre-1967 borders. and having East Jerusalem as its capital. Positive views on China have been bolstered following Beijing’s recent successful mediation in talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The poll also indicates that Israeli counter-terrorist raids and Jewish settlements are seen as the main causes of the failure of previous peace talks, followed by US bias towards Israel and the ongoing dispute over the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the status of Jerusalem.

Palestinians appear polarized over the Abraham Accords, with 52% believing the US initiative has made Israel more aggressive towards the Palestinians, while 43% believe the opposite.
