Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou is a Greek lawyer and politician. She was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2019. Assimakopoulou has also been part of the parliament’s delegation for relations with Israel since 2021. Currently, she is president of Transatlantic Friends of Israel. TFI committed to strengthening the partnership between Europe, the United States, Canada, and Israel. The group is considered a pro-Israeli entity. MEP’s activities also tilt towards a soft stance on Israel.
In Sep 2021, she tweeted, “For too long, Israel has been unfairly targeted at the UN. I’m proud to be one of the co-initiators of the @AJCTAI UN Declaration that seeks to end anti-Israeli bias at the UN. Israel is a key democratic ally. The EU must speak up.!” Here, Tweet portrays that she has leanings towards Israel.
Greek MEP Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou once stated in the EU: “It is time for EU member states and other democracies to follow the United States’ example and vote against these one-sided UN resolutions that unfairly target Israel.”. She often defends Israel in parliamentary activities.
In one of her speeches in the EU, the MEP expressed dissatisfaction with a report that was supposed to concentrate on the relationship between the union and the Palestinian Authority. She points out a substantial imbalance in the references, with about 40 mentions of Palestine and the Palestinian Authority compared to almost 75 references to Israel. The lack of crucial issues in the engagement with the Palestinian Authority, such as the commission’s funded George Eckhart study revealing anti-Semitic content in Palestinian Authority textbooks, is highlighted.
She also criticizes the report for not adequately addressing other vital regional actors. It includes terrorist organizations like Hamas, the influence of Iran, and the IRGC. At the same time, it acknowledges the need to discuss Israel-related issues. Further, she asserts that the report is inappropriate for such debates. MEP expresses concern that the report is used for those who wish to criticize Israel rather than providing an objective analysis.
