MEP Edina Tóth representing the Fidesz party, has been characterized by some as pro-Russian or anti-Ukrainian based on her voting record in the European Parliament. She frequently votes against resolutions that are critical of Russia or supportive of Ukraine. In her voting explanations, she consistently emphasizes the need to end the war in Ukraine, focusing on peace rather than further military escalation or continued support for Ukraine.
Notably, in 2024, Edina Tóth voted against two significant resolutions that were critical of Russia. It covered the first on Russia’s undemocratic presidential elections and the illegitimate extension of these into the occupied territories, and second, the new allegations of interference in the European Parliament, this time in the elections for the EU and with all the negative impacts on the Union. Both resolutions were strongly anti-Russian, reflecting her stance in the European Parliament.
Moreover, She voted against the European Parliament resolution on the need for unwavering EU support for Ukraine after two years of Russia’s war of aggression. In her explanation, she stated that the resolution’s text fails to mention a ceasefire or the initiation of peace talks. Instead, it focuses on encouraging further weapons transfers and the continuation of the war.
She also pointed out that the sanctions policy has not delivered the expected results, and the resolution proposes an even more aggressive expansion of energy-related sanctions, particularly in the nuclear sector and cooperation with ROSATOM. This, she argued, would have significant and direct consequences for Hungary.
Edina Tóth also voted against the resolution on the murder of Alexei Navalny and the need for action by the EU in support of political prisoners and oppressed civil society in Russia. She expressed sympathy for the Navalny family and concurred that the circumstances surrounding his death must be exhaustively investigated. Still, she stated that the more the war is prolonged, the more destruction and loss of human life will result. She firmly believes that peace, not further arms shipments or continued military support, is the only way to end this devastation
