The post-Brexit rapprochement with European countries has begun for the new Labor government, but there is no question of going back.
David Lammy visited Poland and Sweden this Sunday.
He was warmly received by his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski.
The day before, the new head of British diplomacy went to Germany, where he met German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
The latter declared on X shortly afterwards that the United Kingdom was “an indispensable part of Europe, and that they were working with the British government to see how it could move closer to the European Union.”
This first trip abroad aims to strengthen relations with the countries of the European Union.
A new approach to relations with the EU?
David Lammy took office following Labor’s landslide victory in the general election and Keir Starmer becoming Prime Minister.
There is no question for the latter of re-entering the single market of the European Union after the vote of British voters for Brexit in 2016, but David Lammy nevertheless declared that there are “many things that the United Kingdom can do with the EU in the future.”
