Miloš Vučević is a Serbian lawyer and politician. He has been serving as PM of Serbia since 2024. He is also the present president of the Serbian Progressive Party. He previously acted as deputy prime minister of Serbia and minister of defence from 2022 to 2024 and as mayor of Novi Sad from 2012 to 2022. Since he holds the position of PM his actions seem to be pro-Russia.
The new prime minister restated that Belgrade doesn’t plan to impose sanctions on Russia and “cannot and will not give up” the companionship with Russia. Integration into the EU remains a “strategic goal,” he stated. The representative of the arrangement of the Government of Serbia and the head of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in authority, Miloš Vučević, during his address in the Assembly of Serbia, commented that Serbia still has the strategic objective of membership in the European Union. But, he contended that “the fact that the process is encumbered by new political criteria cannot be ignored”.
Recently, the EU has officially conditioned the integration of Serbia on the normalization of ties with Kosovo. Vučević stated that the EU’s expectations are connected to Serbia “humiliating” itself by admitting the independence of Kosovo and entering the sanctions against Russia due to the occupation of Ukraine. However, he stressed that Serbia will not join the sanctions against Russia. “There is no doubt that the pressures will continue, maybe they will strengthen, but we are determined to stay in the same standings”, stated Vučević.
“Serbia cannot and will not give up friendship with Russia, whose people we consider fraternal, as is the case with Ukrainians. We have criticised Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but we have declared that we will not join the policy of sanctions”, said Vučević.
Recently, a controversy sparked when Serbian Prime Minister-designate Milos Vucevic designated two pro-Russian, US-sanctioned politicians as members of his latest cabinet, which will also contain a far-right party leader. Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic declared that Aleksandar Vulin, the US-sanctioned, pro-Russian ex-head of Serbia’s Security Information Agency, will be one of the deputy PMs in his new cabinet.
Another pro-Russian individual who has been put under US sanctions, Nenad Popovic, will be a minister without portfolio in the incoming management. Popovic, a businessman and an ex-government minister, has “abused his Russia-based businesses to enhance himself and gain close relationships with Kremlin senior leaders,” the U.S. Treasury said . Milica Djurdjevic Stamenkovski, leader of a far-right party that did not get sufficient votes to enter parliament, was also designated as minister of demography and family care.
