Heinz-Christian Strache is an Austrian politician. He acted as Vice-Chancellor of Austria from 2017 to 2019 before quitting owing to his involvement in the Ibiza affair. Strache was Minister of Civil Service and Sports from 2018 to May 2019 and chairman of the Freedom Party (FPÖ) from April 2005 to May 2019. Freedom party is considered a pro-Russian party.

In July 2017, Strache met with a purported Russian multimillionaire in Ibiza, who offered campaign support in exchange for public contracts. Unknown to Strache, the entire exchange was staged and recorded by hidden cameras just three months before Austria’s general election. The video, which captured Strache and his party member Johann Gudenus in a luxurious Ibiza villa, revealed discussions about acquiring a stake in a significant Austrian tabloid to influence the election.
Despite concerns about the legality of the proposals, Strache appeared receptive, even agreeing to potentially illegal arrangements. The video’s release sparked public outrage and raised questions about the integrity of Austrian politics. Moreover, in November 2016, Austrian far-right politicians Norbert Hofer and Strache went to Russia to become go-betweens to encourage cooperation between Putin and Trump. While in Moscow, the Freedom Party concluded a “working agreement” with Putin’s United Russia Party.
