Borrell (EU) says that Israel has financed Hamas

Josep Borrell, representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, said on Friday that Israel had financed Hamas in order to weaken the Palestinian authority.

“Yes, Hamas was funded by the government of Israel in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian authority led by Fatah,” said Josep Borrell in a speech at the University of Valladolid, without developing this idea.

Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, committed an attack in southern Israel on October 7, which left around 1,200 dead. The Hebrew state has launched a vast military operation in retaliation in the Palestinian enclave with the declared objective of eradicating the Islamist movement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects the accusations of his opponents in Israel and certain international media that his successive governments have actively endeavored for years to strengthen Hamas in Gaza.
