Diplomacy: the crisis between Algiers and Abu Dhabi takes on a new dimension

Prohibition of certain acts


Algerian justice now prohibits notaries from drawing up notarial deeds signed by mixed Algerian and Emirati companies. This decision could end the contract between the United Algerian Tobacco Company and the Emirati company which produces and distributes tobacco, Staem. According to local media, this company acquired by an Emirati investor in 2005 was supposed to bring money to the Algerian state but is no longer profitable.

A silent crisis


She is therefore suspected of transferring funds abroad. Some observers, however, place this decision within the framework of the silent crisis which has raged between the two countries since the summer of 2023. Divergences on the geopolitics of the region exist on several issues. Abu Dhabi is Morocco’s ally, whose diplomatic relations with Algiers have been severed since 2021.
