Protecting European Democracy: Commission Launches Consultation

The European Civic Forum (ECF), of which the LDH is a member, submitted a contribution.

The Commission’s approach to the dangers to which the European Union focuses on the fact that the attacks come from outside. The European Civic Forum puts at the center of the concerns that a considerable part of the population is detached from democracy by noting that it does not allow public policies to take into account their legitimate expectations in terms of social protection, environmental, economic and effective access to rights.

The role of organized civil society (associations, unions, movements, etc.) in society is a key element for democracy. The contribution of the FCE opposes the specific measures for associations which receive funding from abroad which the European Commission plans to introduce, following the example of what is done for example in the United States and Hungary and which limits in various undue ways the freedom of association.
