The Rising Costs: Impact on Your Windshield Expenses

This is a new obligation that risks costing your wallet dearly. From July 2024, all new vehicles sold in the European Union will have to be equipped with a set of safety systems, according to a new European regulation. Among which: automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane keeping assistant (LKA) and intelligent cruise control (ISA).

Except that these technologies are based on on-board cameras, generally located behind the windshield. Which means that all new cars will have to have it. And this is where the additional costs arise: in addition to the cost of these new technologies, they also require having an impeccable windshield.

So much so that a crack in the windshield, or a simple impact in the field of vision of the on-board cameras, will require replacing the entire windshield, for the proper functioning of this safety technology. “Stone impacts within the camera’s field of view require windshield replacement rather than repair, regardless of the size of the impact,” confirms Carglass in Finland.
