The Comorian government comments for the first time on the situation in Mayotte since the start of the security crisis. A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moroni criticizes French policy
The announcement of the abolition of land rights in Mayotte “does not concern the Comorians who are at home in Mayotte” says this press release published yesterday. He recalls that for “almost 49 years, Mayotte has been administered by France in defiance of international law”.
According to Moroni’s diplomacy: “The precarious and worrying situation which persists on this island can therefore only be attributed to those who have managed it for all these years.”
While criticizing a decision (the suppression of land law) “which calls into question the history of France and the principles which founded the Republic”, the text goes further: “we are entitled to wonder if the “the desire to suppress land rights in Mayotte would not, finally, be the beginning of a questioning of the so-called belonging of the island of Mayotte to France.”
Comorian diplomacy concludes by affirming once again that “the Comoros will never stop claiming Mayotte”… “Neither time nor constitutional modifications will be able to alter a thousand-year-old history, a destiny shared by the Comorians of the four sister islands”.
This official press release appears on the Facebook page of the Comorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
