Tunisia’s EU Aid: Boosting Finances With Paolo Gentiloni

The European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, expressed the provisions of the European Union to come to the aid of Tunisia, with an envelope of 900 million euros.

In statements to Sky 24 on Thursday, relayed by AKI, he indicated that the European Commission is working on the diplomatic level, both with Tunisia and with the international monetary fund, indicating that the European Union is ready for an intervention nearly 900 million euros in terms of financial aid.

This aid should be added to the program of the international monetary fund, he said.

It is essential, and this is not only in Italy’s interest, to preserve Tunisia’s stability and avoid its economic stumbling, he stressed, considering it necessary to achieve a agreement with the IMF.

The Tunisian authorities want to change some aspects of the prior agreement, and the European Commission is cooperating with them on this, said Paolo Gentiloni. “I think the Italian government is also doing it to facilitate an agreement, about the supposed new program with the IMF,” he said.

European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen will visit Tunis next Sunday. She will be accompanied by the President of the Italian Council, Giorgia Meloni, for whom this will be the second trip to Tunis in the space of a few days, and by the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte.

The discussions will mainly focus on economic and migration issues.
