Diplomatic Arsenal: Macron’s Quest For Brics Summit Invitation

The French president has sent his foreign minister to South Africa to convince Pretoria to invite him to the Brics summit scheduled for next August in Johannesburg.
Catherine Colonna, French Minister of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that President Emmanuel Macron would like to be invited to the next summit of the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) scheduled for Johannesburg from August 22 to 24. “We didn’t talk about it today, but we talked about it on May 26” when the two women had already met in Paris, Colonna replied when asked about Macron’s willingness to take part in the summit.

“We are thinking aloud, but it is obviously a decision that the countries concerned are alone in a position to take – on the possibility of continuing this dialogue, why not at the Brics summit or in another format”, a-t- she assured.

If that happened, it would be an innovation within the current Brics participation model, but it could amplify the global reach of the Brics forum,” said South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor.

The request of the French president to participate in the summit of the Brics in South Africa while France is not part of the bloc is very commented. The summit could see the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, under an international arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine.
