European Union: Macron reaffirms his support for Ukraine’s accession negotiations

French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed Sunday, during a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, “France’s support” for the opening of negotiations for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. (EU), announced the French presidency.

According to the same source, Emmanuel Macron welcomed the adoption by the Ukrainian Parliament on December 8 and 9 “of several decisive pieces of legislation, relating in particular to the rights of national minorities, justice reform and the fight against corruption “.

“Ukraine is thus demonstrating its determination to respond immediately to the recommendations made to it by the European Commission,” continues the Élysée.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has already announced his opposition to the opening of this process.

“Ukraine is in difficulty, it is suffering the Russian invasion, and we have decided to support it. It is therefore legitimate for the entire European Council to send good signals to Ukraine (…) However, there are “other types of signals to send than the opening of negotiations for membership in the European Union. (…) I am in favor of raising our level of cooperation, but that does not mean membership,” Orban declared in a interview given to Le Point magazine published Friday.

Representatives of the 27 Member States are due to meet on December 14 and 15 in Brussels to decide on aid of 50 billion euros provided to Ukraine and on its application for membership in the European Union.
