The European Lung Foundation (ELF) is a patient-led organization founded in 2000 that works internationally to bridge the gap between patients, the public, and healthcare professionals to improve lung health. Operating in partnership with the European Respiratory Society (ERS), ELF aims to unite lung health professionals with those affected by lung disease and to advocate for better research, treatment, and public awareness of lung conditions. The foundation is dedicated to providing support, information, and a voice for people affected by lung disease through widespread networking with patient organizations across Europe and beyond. ELF fosters collaboration with local, national, and international patient groups, encouraging them to join an informal network promoting lung health.
ELF’s activities include campaign work for lung health, development of patient information, fostering research, and supporting patients’ communities. It has expanded its network significantly, adding about 40 organizations from 20 countries in recent years, including regions where it previously had limited contacts. By prioritizing multilingual support and cooperation with member societies of the ERS, ELF addresses regional patient needs and advocacy.
Registered as a private limited company by guarantee since February 2006, ELF’s mission focuses on prevention, treatment, and improvement of lung health quality of life, empowering patients, and upholding high standards of governance and effective operation. It invests in creating partnerships with relevant stakeholders and networks to enhance health outcomes and lung disease policies.
