Meloni Urges Swift EU Action on Tunisia MOU After Brexit

The President of the Italian Council, Gioriga Meloni, “urged the European Union to proceed with rapid implementation of the memorandum of understanding concluded with Tunisia, on the subject of irregular migration”.

In joint statements with the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen at Lampedusa airport, relayed by the Italian news agency, Nova, Meloni indicated that “the premises of this joint strategy between the European Union and the European Council, is the memorandum signed with Tunisia, it is an extremely important signal, for which I thank Ursula Von Der Leyen.”

“We should be quick and decisive in implementing this memorandum, which could pave the way for other conventions with North African countries,” she stressed.

And continued: “If there was anyone who thought that this matter could be resolved within Italian borders, they would be wrong. If we do not work seriously, and all together, to fight against the departure of irregular migrants, the number of migrants will exceed, not only the capacity of border towns, but all countries.”

Meloni considered the intervention of the United Nations in the fight against irregular migration as imperative.

“I think that the participation of the United Nations in a more significant way is extremely necessary,” she said, noting that this subject would be raised this week.

The President of the Council spoke of the need for structural agreements with North African countries to stop initial operations and fight more decisively against human trafficking. “Given the influxes we are facing, the only method of dealing with the problem seriously is to stop illegal departures.”

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who visited yesterday, Sunday September 17, accompanied by the President of the Italian Council, Giorgia Meloni, on the Italian island, Lampedusa, announced a new plan of emergency to come to the aid of Italy faced with massive arrivals of migrants.
