Moetai Brotherson Interviews Head of EU Office for Pacific OCTs

The President of French Polynesia, Moetai Brotherson, met, on Friday, the head of the office of the European Commission for the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) of the Pacific, Pierre-Henri Helleputte. Both spoke of the various “partnership instruments between the European Union” and the country.

“The two men” discussed in particular, to welcome it, the budget support program for sustainable water management, which aims to support up to 3.7 billion XPF over the period 2023-2027, the implementation of the Country’s Water Policy. Two steering committees relating to the reform of the public finance management system and the water sector policy were held during the week, in order to allow the first disbursement of the tranche of 715 million XPF by the end of the year”, indicates the Presidency.

“French Polynesia is also eligible for so-called ‘horizontal’ European programmes, some of which are already well exploited (ERASMUS, BEST LIFE), but others that are still difficult to access (EU4 HEalth, Horizon Europe). The Commission representative also presented the possible sources of financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB), in the form of loans”.

“The President thanked the European Union for the financial and technical support it provides (…) and presented the main current structuring projects at the territorial level and the subjects of concern common to the region such as the fight against the effects harmful effects of climate change, lifestyle-related illnesses, the digital divide and even the plundering of marine resources”.

Finally, Moetai Brotherson expressed “his desire to bring Polynesia even closer to Europe by once again appointing a correspondent for European affairs in Paris or Brussels, in order to allow better access to European information and funding. “.
