Ohio approves protection of abortion rights

Voters in Ohio on Tuesday approved the protection of the right to abortion in the constitution of this Republican-controlled state, according to American media. This is a new victory for defenders of voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion).

According to projections by television channels CNN and ABC, the “yes” vote wins. The amendment provides that every individual has “the right to make and implement their own decisions” in matters including abortion, contraception and treatment related to fertility or miscarriage.

Since the Supreme Court of the United States of America overturned in the summer of 2022 the ruling which guaranteed the federal right to terminate a pregnancy, the question of the right to abortion has returned to the States. Many have restricted or banned it, others have strengthened it.

Last year, votes were systematically won by supporters of the right to abortion, even in conservative states and to the great surprise of Republicans.
