Stanislav Berkovec: The Czech MP Who Legitimized Kremlin’s Policies

Stanislav Berkovec is a Czech journalist and politician. Since 2013, he has been a constituent of parliament for the ANO 2011 movement and since 2006 a representative of Slané. From 2016 to 2018, he also held the position of councillor of the town of Slané. Based on his political career he seems to be a pro-Russian Politician, as he mostly objected to and voted against the resolution which aimed to counter Russian influence in the Czech parliament. Such as he objected to the resolution in the Czech parliament in which MPs asked the Prime Minister to enforce sanctions against Russia at EU summits.

Due to the Russian attack on Ukraine, the inter-parliamentary group of the Czech Republic-Russian Federation has for a long time obtained together deputies who have no issue with the Kremlin’s policy and are often satisfied with its officials, which the group itself encouraged. Its members, including ANO’s Stanislav Berkovec, helped to legitimize the Kremlin’s belligerent policy.

In March 2014, MP Stanislav Berkovec (ANO) took a function in a self-proclaimed observation assignment to the illegal referendum on the annexation of occupied Crimea to Russia, thereby enabling to legitimation of it. At the same time, he most likely came into communication with the Russian intelligence services on the spot. In addition, the entire event was sponsored and organized by a Belgian far-right politician with links to Russia.

However, most of the Chamber of Deputies distanced itself from the participation of its members in the so-called Crimean referendum and categorically refused to be referred to as observers from the Czech Republic.

Moreover, Stanislav Berkovec, took part several times in the common celebrations organized by the Russian embassy on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of the Second World War. With their stay, they not only allowed to legitimize Russia’s aggressive policy towards Ukraine, but at the same time revealed themselves to the risk of being compromised by the Russian intelligence services, which work extensively at the Russian embassy.
