Former MEP Ivan Vilibor Sinčić, a critic of EU sanctions on Russia

Ivan Vilibor Sinčić is a Croatian politician and anti-eviction activist. He served as chairman of the Key of Croatia party and as a member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2024.

He has criticized the EU and Croatian governments for imposing sanctions on Russia, describing them as “self-destructive and counterproductive” and noting that Russia had never earned more money due to these measures. This stance reflects his opposition to specific EU policies.

Ivan Vilibor Sinčić has voiced views that could be interpreted as sympathetic to certain aspects of Russia’s position, particularly regarding sanctions.

As an MEP he was also participating in the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, thus probably trying to maintain communication with Russia.

He voted against the European Parliament resolution and the conclusions of the European Council meeting of 24-25 March 2022 regarding the latest developments during the war against Ukraine, the EU sanctions against Russia, and their implementation.

The resolution strongly condemned and outlawed reported atrocities such as rape and execution of civilians, forced displacement, looting, and targeting of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, medical facilities, schools, shelters, and ambulances. The resolution further condemned Russian armed forces for shooting at the fleeing civilians through agreed-upon humanitarian corridors. Ivan Vilibor Sinćić’s opposition to this resolution has sparked speculations on his probable pro-Russian nature.

Some MEPs have been noted for their leaning towards Russia, particularly those from far-right and far-left political groups. These groups often express ideological affinity towards Russia, skepticism towards NATO and EU policies, and advocate for deeper ties with Russia. They frequently oppose sanctions on Russia, arguing that these measures are ineffective or harm European economies. Additionally, there have been credible allegations of some MEPs being involved in disseminating Russian propaganda or participating in pro-Russian media outlets.
