Israel Katz mocks Spanish government for European election defeat

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz mocked the results obtained by the PSOE and Sumar in the European elections on Monday with a fake image in which the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and Vice President Yolanda Díaz appear with crushed eggs on their heads.

“The Spanish have punished the coalition of Pedro Sánchez and Yolanda Díaz with a resounding electoral defeat,” Katz says in a message on the X network. “It turns out that supporting the murderers and rapists of Hamas is not worth it,” he adds.

In addition, Katz tags in the publication the leader of the conservative Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the president of the far-right Vox party, Santiago Abascal.

The message was published after knowing the results of the European elections held this Sunday in Spain, won by the PP obtaining 22 deputies against 20 for the socialists of the PSOE, while the left-wing platform Sumar, partner of the coalition government in Spain, obtained 3 seats, half of that of Vox.

This new attack by Katz comes four days after Spain announced that it would join the process against Israel initiated before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by South Africa.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries are at one of their lowest moments, especially after the recognition by the Spanish government of the so-called “Palestinian state” on May 28 – alongside Ireland and Norway – and Israel’s ban on the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem from providing consular services to Palestinians from June 1.

Spain has its embassy in Israel in Tel Aviv, but maintained a consulate in Jerusalem before 1948, which functioned for decades as a de facto embassy to the Palestinians and maintains diplomatic relations with the Palestinian Authority (PA).
