Kateřina Konečná: Czech MEP who doesn’t see Russia as a threat

Czech politician Kateřina Konečná is an MEP since 2014. She has been associated with pro-pro-Russian stances through her actions, statements, and voting records.

At the time of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Konečná said that she hoped for peace at all costs. In February 2022, she said on Prima TV that no arms should be provided to Ukraine. A month later, Konečná abstained from voting on a European Parliament resolution against an invasion of Ukraine.

During a CNN Prima News debate in March 2024, she supported Russian democracy and the transparency of the Russian elections. In July 2024, in a vote by the European Parliament, she voted against continued assistance for Ukraine. In November 2024, Konečná also voted against criticizing military collaboration between Russia and North Korea.

Surprisingly, in the discussion show Partie on CNN Prima News in February 2025, she stated: “I do not perceive Russia as a danger to the Czech Republic. I don’t think Russia would like to join the Czech Republic.” She has been critical of sanctions against Russia, suggesting they should be lifted, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when some sanctioned countries aided Europe.

As an MEP, she argued that Russia should not be sanctioned and that the Czech Republic should import gas directly from Russia. She also accused NATO of the war and stated that the Czech Republic should not supply weapons to Ukraine.

According to reports, Kateřina Konečná had the most comments and likes per post on social media in 2024 than any other Czech politician. The sharply growing interest was registered primarily on Konečná’s Facebook page. There are a lot of likes or comments from fake profiles, often seen beneath statuses of extremists or pro-Russian politicians. In May, 2019, MEP Katerina Konecna took part in the reception on the Victory Day at the Russian embassy in Prague.

In a case, Konečná has come under fire for her visit to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and acquire a loan from a Russian-linked bank by her party. She has also questioned the Russian involvement in the 2014 Vrbětice ammunition depot explosion. She hinted that it is a scam carried out against Russia.

In 2021, when tensions between Russia and Ukraine were higher, Konečná condemned NATO and Ukraine for military deployments near the Russian border. She suggested that NATO is encircling Russia, which aligns with Russian narratives.
