Spain announced on Monday the release of emergency aid of 3.5 million euros for Unrwa, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, whose operation is threatened by the suspension of funding many countries.
“Spain will release an urgent envelope of 3.5 million euros so that UNRWA can maintain its activities in the short term,” indicated the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Luis Albares, during a
appearance before a parliamentary committee.
“The UNRWA situation is desperate and there is a significant risk that its humanitarian activities in Gaza will be paralyzed in the coming weeks,” he added.
“If funding remains suspended, we will most likely have to cease our operations by the end of February, not only in the Gaza Strip, but also throughout the region,” warned the head of Unrwa, Philippe Lazzarini, on Thursday.
According to the head of European diplomacy, the Spaniard Josep Borrell, the suspended funds currently amount to “more than 440 million dollars, or almost half of the agency’s expected revenues in 2024”.
