Vito Comencini: Putin Backer in Italy Politics

Vito Comencini is an Italian politician and Former Member of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy. His frequent pro-Russian actions showed that he has a tilt towards Putin. Vito Comencini is a prominent figure in Italian politics, known for his affiliations with the “Russian Party” within Italy. 

His views and actions regarding the Ukraine crisis have sparked debate and controversy domestically and internationally. He has invoked pacifism to justify avoiding support for Ukraine with weapons. Additionally, he has blamed NATO expansion for the invasion and asserted that it is the Russians in separatist regions who are enduring the suffering.

“The choice in favor of Russian recognition of the regions of Donbas is one of the predictable consequences of the bitter failure of the Minsk agreements. It seems obvious to me that the West and especially Europe failed to understand and take seriously the demands of the population of Donbass,” Vito Comencini said.

He boycotted the parliament session when Ukraine’s president addressed it. Comencini expressed that to attend Zelenskyy’s speech would have been “disrespectful” to the individuals of Donbas, the eastern Ukrainian territory where Putin-backed rebels seized swaths of land in 2014. 

Moreover, Vito Comencini married Natalia Dandarova, a Russian national, in St. Petersburg in July 2019. After pushing several visits to the Donetsk separatist territory in the Donbas region of Ukraine, comprehended as the Donetsk People’s Republic, since 2015, the Italian parliamentary member often supports the Russian invasion. Since March 2022, he has also earned frequent travels to Russia. “They had already proclaimed themselves autonomous republics,” Commencini told La Repubblica. “Now, Putin has simply recognized them.”
