Mislav Kolakušić is a Croatian politician. He served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to July 2024. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he slammed the EU’s policy towards Russia, called sanctions useless, and usually takes a pro-Russian narrative. He mostly condemns and blames the West for Russian aggression on Ukraine. Mislav Kolakušić was one of the 26 MEPs who voted against the EU Parliament resolution on Russia’s escalation of its war of aggression against Ukraine, on 6 October 2022.
It is a lie that sanctions against Russia will stop the war, they will only impoverish the citizens of the EU. If the EU really wanted to prevent the financing of wars, it would impose the same sanctions on the United States and Saudi Arabia. pic.twitter.com/Aiy1gpzLao

As has been reported in 2022, Mislav Kolakušić criticized a stand of the European Union over the war in Ukraine, “if the EU earnestly wishes for peace, the latter should have imposed not only sanctions against Russia but also against the US and Saudi Arabia.” Speaking at a European Parliament meeting, Kolakušić said the EU should rethink its reliance on American oil and gas since the United States has been involved in more military conflicts than any other country over the past decades.
Germany 🇩🇪 and other EU 🇪🇺 member states have bought 10 billion euros worth of gas and oil from Russia 🇷🇺 in the last 12 days. Stop being hypocritical and funding the Russian war while crying over Ukraine 🇺🇦! pic.twitter.com/ctqaQ5e8uI

He labelled the anti-Russian sanctions as hypocritical, asserting that they were based on lies. Kolakušić emphasized that it is European citizens who are bearing the brunt of the economic fallout from the severed ties with Moscow, highlighting the detrimental impact of the sanctions on the EU’s economy and its citizens.
As reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, Russia-operated Croatian MEP Mislav Kolakusic extended the Kremlin’s remarks that “sanctions against Russia will not prevent the war in Ukraine.”
According to experts, Mislav Kolakušić remarks are beneficial to Russian propaganda to negate Ukraine’s supporters in this war, stating that the sanctions set by EU countries are not enough to prevent it, while the United States is initiating aggression and doing everything to make the fight last longer. The United States, as a partner, is supplying Ukraine with weapons to protect its integrity and sovereignty, which Moscow has infringed upon by starting a bloody war.
