In Germany, Andrij Melnyk has gained a dubious reputation with a few verbal abuses. Now the Ukrainian President is sending him to Brazil as ambassador.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk, known from his time in Germany, as ambassador to Brazil. The corresponding decree was published by the President’s Office on Tuesday. The personnel had already become known in mid-May.
Melynk was the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany from 2015 to 2022. In the German public, he became known through his verbal failures, including towards Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), whom he described as an “offended liver sausage”. After his recall to Kiev, the diplomat was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine last November. He was already responsible for relations with North and South America. Reasons for the downgrading to ambassador were not disclosed.
