Slovak National Party Leader Andrej Danko: Championing Russia’s Narrative in Europe

Andrej Danko is a Slovak politician. He was the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic from 2016 to 2020 and head of the nationalist Slovak National Party since 2012. The Slovak National Party (SNS) has often conveyed a clear pro-Russian stance. Chairman Andrej Danko expressed that Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine were not “historically Ukrainian.” He has also addressed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as “my dear friend.”

Moreover, Andrej Danko complimented Russia on returning to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and reported that the Russian Federation should participate in the discussion and resolution of global issues and common challenges. “We are pleased that Russia can again take a full-fledged part in the PACE work. Europe needs Russia, and I am glad that the votes of Slovak parliamentarians contributed to this,” he stated and stressed that without a discussion with the Russian Federation, it is impossible to solve the main problems of our time.

Andrej Danko assumes that such events as the International Forum “Development of Parliamentarism” show that Russia is keen for a comprehensive dialogue with all countries.

Andrej Danko also told reporters on the sidelines of the Forum that it is always a great privilege for him to visit Russia.

“Once again I would like to express gratitude to the Russian Federation for all the initiatives that it offers. This Forum, where decisions can be made in such spheres as the fight against cyber threats, as well as initiatives on solving local conflicts can be discussed, is one of them. And I believe that we can use the experience of the Russian Federation,” said Andrej Danko.

On 28 April 2023, Slovak President Čaputová and Czech President Petr Pavel visited Ukraine as part of their foremost joint foreign travels. The event sparked a wave of hostile remarks against the president by pro-Russian multiple dubious actors including Andrej Danko who blamed her for neglecting Slovak citizens and defending an allegedly Ukrainian “fascist” regime.

Andrej Danko, chairman of the nationalist SNS (Slovak National Party), blamed President Čaputová, as well as President Pavel, for not overlooking their countries and not acknowledging the demands of their citizens. This is, once again, an allegation that is unsupported and attempts to show a false association between aid to a war-stricken country and approval for the citizens of Slovakia, even though there is not one.
