Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son meets UN, country leaders in Geneva

During his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Minister Bùi Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and supports the central role of the UN in the global governance system and in the solving common challenges.

He called on the UN to continue supporting Vietnam in the country’s development and contribute to building a peaceful, stable and resilient Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) community.

The Vietnamese official welcomed the initiatives of Secretary-General António Guterres and shared Vietnam’s recent efforts such as the adoption of the road map to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and the implementation of commitments on climate change at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP), including the implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

Bui Thanh Son also announced that Vietnam will continue to send officers and soldiers to the UN peacekeeping forces in the coming times, including the police.

Guterres expressed admiration for Vietnam’s achievements and thanked the country for its great cooperation and support for UN priorities, including participating in peacekeeping, implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, supporting reform of the Security Council and international financial institutions and pioneering the implementation of climate change commitments.

During his meeting with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, Bùi Thanh Son highly appreciated the role of the President, especially in the context of a complex global situation, saying that under the leadership of the President, The UN has made many positive contributions to promoting international law, maintaining peace, stability and development cooperation among countries, as well as supporting the efforts of countries, including Vietnam, to address the urgent challenges related to climate change and sea level rise. On this occasion, he invited officials to visit Vietnam in 2024.

Dennis Francis said Vietnam has made practical contributions to the work of the UN in general as well as to its office in particular, including sending staff to work in the office.

He shared Vietnam’s views on concerns about peace, respect for international law and responding to climate change, stressing that in the complex global situation, the UN and its member states must join forces to address the emerging international issues and focus on promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

With this in mind, the UN plans to organize a “Sustainability Week” in April 2024 with five main themes: tourism, infrastructure, energy, sustainable debt management and transport, in response to the ” Future Summit” scheduled for September 2024. He said he looked forward to Vietnam’s active participation.

The Vietnamese Foreign Minister also met with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian, during which Bùi Thanh Son highly appreciated the recent development of Vietnam – Iran relations, especially the high-level contacts between the two countries.

He expressed hope that the two foreign ministries will continue to coordinate closely and with relevant agencies to fully and effectively implement the agreements reached during National Assembly Speaker Vuong Dinh Hue’s visit to Iran in August 2023, as well as during the meeting between State Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuân and Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber in January 2024.

Bùi Thanh Son proposed that the two sides facilitate the operation of businesses in both countries, calling on Iran to support the development and open the market of Vietnamese halal products and strengthen cooperation in multilateral forums, including the UN .

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Vietnam is an important partner of Iran in Southeast Asia. He expressed hope that the two countries will continue to strive to increase the volume of bilateral trade to match the potential of bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation in the fields of education and training.

The two sides also discussed international issues of common concern, including the situation in the Middle East, and agreed to strengthen cooperation to contribute to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

The Iranian diplomat also invited his Vietnamese counterpart to visit Iran soon.

During his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Abugaliuly Nurtleu, Bùi Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Kazakhstan, an important partner from Vietnam to Central Asia.

He welcomed the results of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s visit to Vietnam in August 2023 and expressed hope that the two sides will continue to coordinate closely to implement the agreements reached during the visit.

For his part, the Kazakh leader affirmed that his country attaches particular importance to relations with Vietnam and agreed that the two sides should promote cooperation and support each other in international forums.

The two sides agreed that it is necessary to increase exchanges of delegations at all levels, especially at the highest level, further promote cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment and create more favorable conditions for transport, tourism and trade between the two countries.

On the same day, Bùi Thanh Son also met separately with Moroccan Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, and Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi. During the meetings, he affirmed the common position of ASEAN and Vietnam on the peaceful resolution of disputes based on international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), ensuring safety and security of navigation and overflight in the East Sea.
