AfD Politician Olga Petersen Finds Refuge in Russia

Olga Petersen is a German politician affiliated with the pro-Kremlin Alternative for Germany (AfD) and is currently a member of the Hamburg Parliament. She is known for her perceived backing of Russian President Vladimir Putin. She advocates enhancing “the bilateral relationship” with Russia. Germany and Russia require a solid relationship based on trust, she expressed.

In July 2023, over a year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started, Petersen appeared on Russian state television’s Russia-1 “60 Minutes” program. The program is mediated by journalist Yevgeny Popov, a constituent of the Duma for the United Russia party and defends Putin’s policies there.

Petersen contends environmental, nutritional and sexual teaching at school, “left-wing gender policy”, and vaccination obligations. She supports financial relief for freelance midwives. In the 2020 Hamburg state elections, Petersen was elected to the Bürgerschaft of Hamburg. With 4,018 votes, she acquired the third-best result of her party in candidates. Petersen is also a member of the board of the AfD Hamburg and deputy chair of the district board of Harburg.

In June 2024 it came to light that Olga Petersen had pursued refuge in Russia, and feared having her children taken by the German state over her support for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Petersen departed Hamburg with her children, prompting widespread assumptions about her whereabouts.

Several weeks before her disappearance, her party – the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) – ousted her from its Hamburg section for travelling to Russia as an election observer in March and stating the vote “open, democratic, and free.”

Alexander Brod, a member of the Russian Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, disclosed that Petersen had settled in Russia with three of her four kids. Declarations of support for Russia’s military procedure in Ukraine are illegal in Hamburg, with a court in the city sentencing a guy to three years in prison for sharing “pro-Russian ideas” and utilising the ‘Z’ symbol – painted on some Russian military vehicles working in the conflict – on his Telegram channel.
